Though it is a well-known fact that I love summer and being outside and sunsets and taking pictures of the sky, etc. I am not what one might consider an ‘outdoor enthusiast’. I used to be. I used to be outside constantly and would play in the sprinklers and run around in the grass and even used to enjoy camping. I know, I know – it’s hard to believe. But some of my favorite memories as a kid include going to the park, playing on a baseball team (for one (1) season including a memorable game in which I attempted to steal 2nd base and while running I tripped and fell and just as I stood up ready to cry my eyes out everyone cheered because they thought I slid to the base on purpose in a power move so I bit back the tears and took the praise), and yes, even sleeping on the ground in a tent.
August to me has always felt like the Sunday of months. It’s still nice and there’s still a little time left for fun but you know that time is running out and it feels a bit melancholy. As August slowly slips in and we start to wind down on another summer, I got to reminiscing and I decided I wanted to somehow blend the summer girl I used to be with the woman I am now. I am happy to report that today’s outfit of the day: parks and recreation finds a way to celebrate both.
I love adding a bold element to my outfits year round but throwing an unexpected bright color in the mix whether it’s a hot pink bathing suit, lime green nails, bright yellow shoes, etc. is the perfect way to take your look straight to summer break. Yellow was my favorite color when I was a little girl (and actually still is to this day) so for me it was an easy decision to make this look pop with these Missguided bright yellow heels.
Another thing that hasn’t really changed is my love of coloring. Sure, back then the subject matter was My Little Pony and Strawberry Shortcake and now it’s Prince or the Golden Girls or really intricate floral patterns as a way to relieve stress but the thing that still remains the same is I have stacks of coloring books. When I saw that Crayola had created a beauty line I obviously had to purchase a lip crayon immediately. This bright pink adds another fun pop of color to the overall look.
Probably the most consistent thing that has stayed with me over the years is my love of dressing up. My aunt used to send me and my sister beautiful handmade dresses that were definitely too much everything but I absolutely loved them and would often ask to ‘put on a party dress’ even if I was just sitting outside in the yard. This ASOS dress is already on the cusp of official Party Dress territory with the full tulle skirt but the big bow on the back takes it straight to my favorite place – over the top.
You may have noticed in that last picture that I had a quick shoe change. This is to A. ensure I didn’t fall off that bench I was standing on and break my ankle in 4″ heels but more importantly B. to show you that there are ways to change a few details to accommodate for your comfort level without sacrificing the feel of the look you want to create. These Forever 21 mules are a much lower heel at 2″ but the color is still bright and fun and the open toe makes it even more summer ready.
Things have certainly changed over the years and yes, I now refer to summer as ‘working during hot months’ instead of the blissful three month long break it used to signify. But no matter how much time passes or what differences there are in what an ‘outdoor activity’ looks like for me now versus back then I know one thing that will never change – I will always be a summer girl.
What are some of your favorite summer memories? Do you have any summer traditions you still keep up? I’d love to hear about them in the comments!
