2016 has been a very strange year. It seems like every week there is something happening that is at the least bizarre and at the worst a total tragedy. Something that I count on the tragic end of things is the loss of two legends who were true icons in every way – Prince and David Bowie.
These two men changed pop culture in countless ways and inspired millions and millions of people with their music and their fashion. They showed the world that not only is it okay to be different but that it’s extraordinary and AMAZING to be different and that is why this post, ‘dearly beloved’, is dedicated to them.
First things first. We have GOT to talk about The Patch. I saw this beautiful post of this graphic on a black bomber jacket scrolling through Laser Kitten on instagram one day and I’m not exaggerating when I say that right away my heart started beating faster. I immediately went to the link but having just purchased some bomber jackets was a little hesitant of another one. Then I saw it. The Patch. I saw it and my mind went to the Pull & Bear denim jacket I have lying in the back of my trunk just waiting for some magic to be done to it and it is safe to say I have never checked out of a store so quickly.
At 10″ it is a definite statement piece so you will want to make sure you have an item that has enough surface area for it to shine. It is also very high quality and pretty heavy so I found denim to be a perfect backdrop for it’s sturdiness. Twenty minutes and a quick ironing job on my kitchen counter and this beauty was born.
One of the most inspiring ways Prince and Bowie experimented with fashion was their complete disregard for what was “for men” and what was “for women”. If they liked it, they wore it, end of story. Often this ended with a mixture of masculine and feminine details in their looks and that is what I set out to achieve with my own outfit here. Since there is a lot of color and texture to the overall look, I kept the basics minimal with some legging bike shorts and a plain black tee. The Pull & Bear denim coat is actually from the men’s section of ASOS and I loved the oversized feel of it from the moment I saw it. A secret tip of mine is actually always checking the men’s section (especially coats and tops) at ASOS and FOREVER 21. Accessorizing came quickly for this ensemble – Aviators have a traditionally unisex feel to them though these HIGHKEY by Desi x Quay beauties are certainly more glam than most others. The velvet tie corsage from ASOS and leather bow hair tie from Sephora brought the feminine energy in and completed the overall look.
For makeup I went with drama – a dark, defined brow (lately I have been loving Colourpop’s brow pencil), heavy bronzer and a bright pink lip which is a mix of Candy Yum Yum and Saint Germaine, both by MAC.
In keeping with the fun and vibrant tone of the overall outfit, for my hair I kept it simple with natural curls pulled into a high pony. This also lets the jacket shine without a ton of texture covering it up and also let the makeup stand alone as well.
Ready to put your own spin on things? To recreate this look you will need:
Laser Kitten has this and quite a few other types of patches available via their website and there is a goldmine of patches on etsy as well. If you aren’t quite ready for the committment of an iron on patch, there are thousands of amazing hand designed pins out there that can tell the world who you are just as well. Find the one that speaks to you the loudest and make it your own.
Though the loss of these two icons is felt on a daily basis, we can help keep pieces of what made their spirits so special around for many many more years. Neither Prince nor Bowie could be summarized in one particular genre – not musically, not in fashion, not in their personal lives. It’s impossible to describe either one in any certain category because they defy them all. Loving them for my entire life, and losing them within just a few short months of each other this year, has definitely reminded me that we should be spending our time here doing things that make us happy, embracing our passions and celebrating the things that make us unique.
One of the things I love most about living in LA is all of the cool things you see when you’re just driving down any random street. Whether it is the more permanent wall murals, every changing sidewalk art, a random pop up street fair, or even the quick glimpses of different fashion and culture you see just observing there is always something unique to catch your eye and make an impact in an unexpected way.
Today’s outfit of the day is inspired by that and what better way to show the pieces than with pictures that were taken among some of my favorite finds on Melrose.
Naturally when spending time in the city of angels one must try a set of wings. This gorgeous painted pair is right next to a chain length fence in between a few random businesses – truly a diamond in the rough.
While the wings are the obvious must have accessory in the picture above, the rest of the outfit is designed to show a fun way to take on a classic black and white theme. I really like the contrast of the block lettering on the graphic tee with the feminine lace of the shorts – the opposites help balance each other. A great way to add dimension to any outfit is to introduce a print somewhere in the look. These striped Beacon Hill boots are a favorite find of mine from Free People and I love that they really pop with the other pieces and help tie everything together while still staying within the color scheme.
Art can be found literally anywhere – a crosswalk button, a patch of sidewalk, the side of a dumpster, etc. You just have to keep an eye out for it otherwise you will end up just passing right by. It’s a good reminder not to count something out just because it’s not what immediately catches your eye. With a little effort it can be something beautiful.
Ah, the famed pink wall. I have wanted to take pictures in front of this bubblegum pink beauty for so long and finally made the time to do it. The wall is of course home to Paul Smith on Melrose and if you pass by at any given time of day chances are you will see many a model posing in front of it.
This gem was found walking to get coffee – I love everything about it from the message, the use of Beyonce lyrics, the artwork itself, and of course the accessory on her arm.
We all know how accessories can make or break an outfit – let’s talk about some of the details on the shoes and sunnies in this look.
The sunglasses for this look needed to be black or white to fit the scheme and while I love big white sunnies, something about these classic looking Quay’s just felt like the right choice.
Another great detail on these boots are the outside cut-out for a little skin peek-a-boo. The back of the boot is brown leather – With the mix of black, white and brown they truly match with everything!
Art isn’t just shown in the obvious mediums – at Alfred Coffee (and the newly opened Alfred Tea Room just around the corner) they have little details everywhere to leave you inspired (including in your drink!).
That was fun! People ask me a lot why I love Los Angeles so much when there is so much to be frustrated by – traffic, parking, crowds, etc. But for me I don’t mind those things when there is so much waiting to be experienced at the end of the drive. I happened upon all of these things within just a few random blocks wandering down Melrose to get coffee one day and I love knowing that whether it’s in Beverly Hills or West Hollywood or Downtown LA or Silverlake – no matter where you are going or what you are doing you can be sure you will find way to be inspired.
Wish upon a star with me with today’s outfit of the day featuring brights, blues, and Beverly Hills.
This outfit was one of those that came together almost instantly when I saw this See by Chloe tee-shirt. I loved the old school ringer tee look and the bright stars and knew I wanted it to be something a little vintage inspired and a lot fun. I immediately pictured these Glamorous high waisted velvet shorts and once I saw these denim booties on ASOS the perfect look came together for a day of shopping in Beverly Hills on a sunny, beautiful day.
Now you know me and know I don’t mind gathering attention for an outfit but still I started the day with a more subtle lip color – although the Too Faced melted matte’s are amazing and don’t rub off too easily, I figured it was better safe than sorry when trying on clothing that someone else may end up buying. So instead of going blue right from the start I opted for this awesome peach shade in Feelin’ Myself.
To transition from daytime to late afternoon without changing any articles of clothing, try a really bold lip! This shade of blue, also Too Faced melted matte in Who’s Zoomin Who, is one of my favorite lip colors right now and surprisingly easier to pull off than one might think. One thing I absolutely love about bold lip color is that it is an instant and dramatic outfit update that can take you from casual fun in the sun to a bit more mature and ready for sunset cocktails and even into the nighttime.
Want to catch your own falling star? To recreate this look you will need:
Like the idea but want to make it more your own? Simply gather up a graphic ringer tee, high-waisted shorts in a unique texture such as velvet or suede (I would avoid leather for this particular outfit as it will change the overall vibe to something a little more edgy), printed ankle booties and a bold lip color.
Today’s outfit of the day lite is an ode to the end of summer (insert broken heart emoji).
When there are no more summer picnics, you become the picnic (or maybe just the watermelon).
I love these sunnies for the soft pink frame and green mirrored lenses and I love LeighAnn for the great hugs. Both sets of sunnies are Nordstrom BP (and a steal at under $15 each!)
Thankfully here in LA we still have another month of warm weather (see also: over 75 because anything under brings out our fall sweaters) but with school back in session and the daylight hours already getting a bit shorter, it’s safe to say that summer 2016 is officially burning out.
It’s hard to believe we are actually in July already but alas, here we are and just in time to celebrate the birth of two very special America’s – the USA and Steve Rogers (that’s Captain America of course!).
Today’s post is all about dressing patriotic and pretty no matter what your plans are to celebrate our lovely Lady Liberty.
Our first look is one I like to call Miss America – an ode to the darling Steve Rogers and the era in which he grew up. It is all about pin-up vibes with soft curls, a deep side part, and curve hugging glamour. Happy birthday, Cap – I salute you today and every day!
This retro outfit also works for any kind of pool party or beach event you’ll be attending – the one piece under the skirt is actually a bathing suit! You can use the head scarf for a pony in a pinch or to keep your hair from getting wet or too wind-blown at the beach.
Make-up wise I went for a neutral eye with winged liner, tinted moisturizer with a lot of highlighter on my face and finished with a bold red lip. I wanted something that would last during the outside sunshine hours but not feel too heavy. This lip shade is Kylie’s lip kit in ‘Mary Jo K’ and probably my favorite red I’ve ever worn. It stays on all day long and is truly complementary to all skin tones.
Foxy Firework is both comfy and cute and perfect for just about any casual celebration you might find yourself at. When the sun goes down, throw on a baggy denim jacket or big blanket sweater and you might find yourself enjoying more than one kind of fireworks!
I love this necklace because it’s all one piece so it’s easy to throw on but each strand has a different texture to it and it really dresses up any look. Adding layered necklaces or even a single strand choker and the white mules as pictured add that little bit of style to an otherwise simple outfit.
The make-up idea here was more focused on the lip (Kylie’s Mary Jo K again!) rather than a dramatic eye – something about red lipstick just screams 4th of July to me.
Flirting with Freedom
We are celebrating freedom this weekend and that includes your own freedom to make your fashion choices as flirty and fun as you want. Flirting with Freedom is doing that exact thing for me – while Foxy Fireworks was a little more simple, this look is pure fun. It brings together some of my favorite American classics – Pepsi, cut offs, and stars and stripes. I finished off this flirty look with a topknot and fun mirrored sunnies.
What I really love about dressing up for this holiday is that it is really so easy to do – by adding just one small thing you can get a huge result.
The accessories above show how just changing one piece can alter your whole look – Try a headpiece or hat for a casual statement, a big flower for a more polished look, some bold shoes if you’d rather keep your outfit on the simple side, or even a blanket or beach towel can be how you show your stars and stripes. Small touches with your sunnies can make a huge impact too!
Our last Independence Day idea is for those lovely ladies who are looking for a step up from the typical relaxed ensemble. It works for a BBQ or party and the satin of the skirt automatically takes it from casual to couture. I paired a fun popsicle bodysuit with a gorgeous satin maxi, a heeled sandal, and a headband with some gold detailing to complete the look.
I wanted to do something a little more daring and dramatic so I went for a bold blue lip. This particular shade is Too Faced Melted Matte in “Who’s Zoomin Who”. I am obsessed with the matte lip trend because of the staying power – even through eating, drinking, etc. throughout the day my lips didn’t need to be reapplied a single time. The Too Faced ones are great also because while most matte lip products dry out my lips, this formula made them feel incredibly moisturized even while lasting all day.
I have always loved July 4th and some of my favorite memories growing up include my mom making it a fun and special day no matter what we did. It was her favorite holiday and one I’ll always carry fondly in my heart for that reason. While I definitely wish she was here, I like to think that she is enjoying her own special front row view of the fireworks now.
This post is for you, mom. Don’t worry – I’ll be careful with the sparklers.
Hope you all have a special, safe, and stylish holiday weekend!
Today, we celebrate Civil War.
No, not that civil war. Of course we are talking about Captain America: Civil War, the latest installment from the Marvel universe.
Weirdly a lot of people are surprised to hear how long I’ve loved the comic world of Marvel and are even more surprised to learn how much. It’s a weird stigma that its a genre just for the boys and because I am a fashion loving lady I must only care about the movies for the eye candy. Well that stigma is old and dated and just not true. More females than ever are finding a home as a Marvel fan for so many other reasons than a good looking cast. Female superheroes like Black Widow and Scarlet Witch are vital to the mission both in Avengers and in the upcoming Civil War film, kicking ass with their unique strengths and abilities. And as for the argument that I can’t mix a love of fashion with a love of superheroes? Today’s post ‘Avengers Ensemble: Comic Book Couture roundup’ puts an end to that.
There is a battle below featuring some very different ways to show your comic style.
The first look features a holiday themed Marvel sweater and to dress it up I paired it with some leather leggings in a snakeskin texture and some flat ankle booties. It’s a simple look but still shows a bit of edge with the leather.
The Iron Man bodysuit above is one of my favorite purchases because it fits perfectly under so many things. Above I wanted to go a little more feminine so I did big curls, some high waisted tight jeans, and a gold heel. Of course I had to add some signature leopard print to the look too! Also pictured above it a pairing of three necklaces (it’s tough to see) but they spell out I <3 with a Captain America shield charm on the third one.
This next look is my favorite (are you surprised?) because its so different from the norm. I loved this tank top because of the bright colors and how it was so clean with the lines of character names instead of a big picture on the front like most other clothing items I’ve come across.
With the colorful top I went mostly black with the rest of the look minus the white snake skin TBA booties. These are awesome with a lucite heel and it made me feel a little more animated overall.
If a headpiece is easier or more comfortable for you to try instead of a bright white or texture bootie, I added in a headband with rainbow pom poms to bring in another element to the rainbow colors of the top. As you can see above, it adds a little something extra as well.
Makeup wise I kept my face pretty neutral minus a little color on my lips since the focus is on the colors of the outfit and there is already quite a bit going on. I went with a purple Too Faced matte lipstick (these matte lipsticks are my absolute obsession by the way!).
Wanting to show your pride more subtle? I know what you’re thinking, since when are silver red and blue star boots subtle? But I’m talking subtle in representing for Captain America without a licensed shirt or other item. These booties are also just really fun and add an unexpected touch to any look.
I was feeling very over the top glamour so I paired these beauties with a simple black dress and stockings with over the knee socks and a faux fur coat. They also look awesome with some cuffed jeans and a white tee for a little more laid back look if that is more your speed.
There are some other great accessories out there if you get creative if something actually subtle is more you. The clutch (they call it a clutch but it’s a coin purse let’s be honest here) is a fun way to add a little danger to your overall look or etsy is a goldmine for cute and custom jewelry. The necklace above is the one referenced earlier and is Cap’s shield with some text hand written on the back.
Some days even I just want to hang out in a tee-shirt and some cutoffs and of course there is plenty of opportunity for that too.
These shorts are a favorite of mine because they’re old and loose and worn in and hand destroyed so I know they are one of a kind. I like them too because you can go more casual (like shown) or go a little more edgy with just a change of shoes and a different top.
Make-up wise I went for some ‘classic beauty’ looks with heavy bronzer and a bold red lip since the overall look is so casual. I added a pair of thick glasses and put my hair in a half bun to pull it all together.
My favorite way to mix fashion and comics however was definitely this moment below with all three of my favorite superheroes all together (well, sorta).
As much as I LOVE Cap and Bucky (and I really really do!) I have been an Iron Man girl for almost my whole life so in the end I just had to take the side of #TeamIronMan. As you can see, the boys on Team Cap were not as understanding. Seriously though, this picture is one of my favorites and they were really cute about taking it so thank you again to Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan for being so wonderful.
Well we’ve made it to the end of the line with comic book couture and I think it’s pretty clear that it’s easy to mix up your favorite things if you just use a little creativity. What’s your favorite way to mix fashion into something that people might not expect?
Now I’m off to go watch this movie (finally!) so smooches until next time!
One of the new site features I’ll be doing though is ‘outfit of the day lite’ – instead of a full picture heavy post with commentary it will be a shortened version of an OOTD with just one – two outfit shots and just the outfit basics. I’m excited to kick of OOTDL with my Easter look ‘silly rabbit’.
outfit of the day lite: silly rabbit
This kick off is also part of Glam Girl on a Budget – from head to toe the entire outfit was under $100!
If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time one thing you know to be true is that I love having fun with my outfits. I love vibrant colors, bold patterns, mixing texture and tons of silly details. Today’s look mixes all of those things and I’m throwing in a 48″ inflatable heart because if there is one thing to go big on every time its definitely showing some love.
outfit of the day: rain.bo brite
This heart inner tube is my current favorite thing. It’s by ban.do (www.shopbando.com) and they are known for their cute and fun accessories but their collection of summer stuff has got to be my favorite. Who even needs a pool when you can surround yourself in love anywhere 🙂
My other current obsession are the unique and fun pieces by Lazy Oaf (www.lazyoaf.com). I’ve recently started picking up their shirts and dresses and each one is so creative and unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere. Definitely a summer favorite for me and you can expect so see more of their stuff in my OOTD’s as my collection grows.
No look is ever complete for me without my signature leopard touch somewhere on it. These little wedge booties added a bit of edge to my overall look to keep it from looking too sweet while adding in a pop of print and texture at the same time.
I went for two different sunnies looks with this outfit – the first were a round pair of metallic mirrored frames from ASOS that reflect in green and helped to tie in the colors of the rainbow on the dress. I also love the current influx of round sunglasses and the instant 70’s vibe they add to any look.
The second look are some old standby’s for me – these fun and adorable sunnies were a purchase from Nordstrom last summer at a steal under $40. They’ve unfortunately been gone quite awhile but whenever I need a pop of bright in my look these come through every time.
Full outfit details:
If you haven’t quite figured it out yet, I’m still on a major 70’s/rainbow/tie-dye kick and of course am always trying to find ways to incorporate these types of details to my own signature style. You can do the same with any current trends you are finding you love but are afraid may not work – they key is to make these ideas work with you instead of you having to fit your comfort and signature styles into something else.
What are some standout trends you’ve been dying to try but are nervous to? Leave your ideas in the comments or drop me a note – I bet together we can figure out a way to make it work 🙂
Hello and happy St. Paddys day! In the spirit of the holiday, I decided to go a little bit different with today’s look and instead of focusing on going full green I wanted to follow the rainbow. 🙂
ootd: pot of gold.
Because the ensemble here has a lot going on with pattern, texture, ruching and some color with the sunnies/shoes I decided to forgo any other accessories and let each piece of the look speak for itself.
I’m really big into the round sunnies look this year and especially ones like these that have a different color than the typical you’d expect. These frames are lavendar with a green mirrored lens.
Listen. I know. Shorts is a stretch. BUT look how cute the side ties are?? And the flattering ruching? Sometimes you just gotta go for it and say “I know they’re short, I know its a risk but I’m doing it anyway” and these shorts are that for me.
One thing that definitely makes these shorts appear even shorter are the heels paired with them but with today being all about the green, it was definitely time to break out my metallic Marni heels.
The relaunch has been delayed but is still happening – look for an all new FCXO.com design and more consistent post schedule coming April 2016. 🙂
Have fun tonight loves and stay safe!
Happy new year my lovelies! So. I know. It’s been six months. It’s been 6 months (!) of 37 flights, 6 inches of hair growth, 27concerts, 3 countries, 10 states, 4 trains, and 1 new job switch.
Yeah. It’s been a very crazy, busy, lovely, stressful, fun, life changing year and I’m taking many lessons and memories on to 2o16 and leaving many things behind where they belong as well. Before kicking off the official 2o16 filthycutexo site revamp here in a couple short weeks I wanted to take a look backward toward the clothes that helped make this year one of a kind and the trends that will continue to shine after the ball drops.
The beginning of 2015 started off with a bang for me – literally. I wanted a change and cut blunt bangs across my forehead and while I liked them some of the time, they were a commitment I personally was not quite ready for. Nevertheless, the heavy bang trend continues into 2016 (even more now than ever with the focus on 70’s era everything).
two: red red wine.
This deep red color was a big part of my 2015 and I’m so glad it’s here to stay in 2016 as well. It’s one of those shades that matches with most skin tones and can really be worn as a neutral (yes, I said red can work as a neutral. Try it out!). Crop tops also appear to be sticking around – for the winter season, try a cropped sweater with a high waist pant or textured skirt and for the warmer months a bralette or more delicate material is gorgeous with a pair of cutoff shorts.
Whether you consider it wine, berry, or any other food or drink – hang on to this gorgeous color.
three: live while we’re young.
One thing that really made an impact in my style this year was silliness. From fruit prints such as pineapple and watermelon to silly details on booties and bags – fun was a major theme in my fashion picks and I am very excited to keep this up into 2016. No matter if its incorporating your favorite band, favorite color, or even your favorite food – finding a little way to show your personality makes getting dressed that much more fun and this year and every year fun is always in fashion!
four: jump on it.
I’m thrilled as ever to say the jumpsuit aka my favorite type of piece for the last few years is holding steady. There are more styles available now than ever so whatever your comfort level is I promise there is one out there for you. If you are on the more petite side, a romper might be the key to help lengthen your legs. Not comfortable with your shoulders on display? A long sleeve playsuit is your answer. If you prefer to be covered up completely, a long sleeve full length jumpsuit is still sexy without showing a thing. If you are tall like me and like the look of the full jumpsuit but also the romper? Try a sheer pant with shorts underneath for the best of both worlds like above.
And as always, anything that works for a concert while also letting me try out one of my favorite looks is something to take into any year ahead.
five: make a statement.
The bold look of a statement necklace is always an easy way to add some drama to your look. Whether you are trying to bring your whole look over the top or just throwing one on over a basic tee with some jeans, they add instant style. There are literally endless combinations you can try based on your comfort level – I like to go big and mix various metals, stones, feathers, textures, etc. but a single color statement will do just fine too.
A lot of the pieces featured above are available through www.stelladot.com/filthycutexo where I am always happy to give style advise as well 🙂
six: tulle the end.
One piece I got into this year was the tulle skirt and this romantic look is one I will be carrying over. I like that you can go sweet with the ivory and ballerina inspired accessories but you can also add some edge to your look with a fun bootie and a graphic tee. You can truly make these pieces your own based on your personality. One other way I can’t wait to try out is with a denim button up (tied up or tucked in) with some leopard heels this spring.
What were some looks you tried out in 2015 that you are excited to bring with you ahead? Anything you are happy to be leaving behind? Let me know and I’m so excited to see you again in a couple weeks for the brand new launch.
